Canaries in the Goldmine?

So despite my recent bad relationship news, I'm still an artist. And when I got the following email this morning, it really got me thinking.

Now, there's nothing new here that I don't already know, or think, but to have things put so eloquently is good to see. Any New Yorker who wants New York to remain a cultural city needs to read this email.

That is sad to think about what the price of progress costs?

as long as the galleries in chelsea and soho stay put, the artists wont have any choice but to stay as well. galleries are doing better business this year then at any time in history. record bonuses were reported on wall street in the billions. some portion of that will trickle up to mid-town west. so, in effect, while rents are going up, so is the market for art. being in new york is important for career-minded artists, so theyll find a way to stay; even if it means being "creative" about how to live here. if the immigrants can do it, so can artists...

maybe mom and dad can help with the rent...?

relocating to any other city--while an admirable stand--will at best keep one's career at a plateau, or at worst, devalue it. and while a "career" as an artist is not everybody's goal, the fact is if you want a "career", you have to find a way to stay. there are so many people with financial and social connections concentrated in this city, that to pass it by would do your career a disservice, perhaps crippling it. and since being an artist is so frikkin tough anyway, any advantage (social or financial) will help keep the dream alive.

its one thing to be an accountant who wants to be an artist on the weekend. its quite another to hew that line full time.

looked at another way: why doesnt polly move to des moines, IA and work at the playhouse theatre doing godspell? she could buy a >huge< house south of grand ave. for half of what shell have to pay here.

im just sayin.

Terrible. Thanks for putting this out there so people can rally and incite action.

But yes, I work and still try to be arty on my own. If you don't have a means of supplementing income, well then the phrase "starving artist" will finally have some meaning, like it has throughout the ages.
